What this means for firm owners in Maryland

Track each Maryland PE’s renewal date and PDH. Licenses renew every two years, with 16 PDH required per term, including at least 1 PDH on ethics, conduct, standards of practice or care, or Maryland engineering laws and regulations. CPC requirements do not apply to the first renewal after initial licensure. Up to 8 PDH earned over the required 16 may carry forward to the next term, but not during the first renewal cycle.

Before hiring a PE licensed elsewhere, confirm Maryland’s comity requirements with the board. The board offers comity through an NCEES Record; check the board site for details. A firm with a Corporate, Partnership, LLC, or LLP permit renews every two years. Its responsible member must renew before the firm can renew.

Owner checklist

  • Track each Maryland PE’s renewal date and confirm the current renewal process with the board.
  • Keep records of PDH earned for each term, including the required ethics-related PDH.
  • Confirm Maryland comity requirements with the board before hiring a PE licensed elsewhere, and ask about using an NCEES Record.
  • Track the firm permit renewal and make sure the responsible member renews first.
