How to choose
Start with the firm's actual need. FE and PE exam prep serves engineers preparing for licensure; PDH courses help licensed engineers meet continuing education requirements. Some providers cover both. Check the course catalog, subject depth, delivery format, and whether employees can study on their own schedules.
Fit matters. A small firm may need simple individual enrollment and completion records. A larger firm may need group assignment, manager reporting, and a way to add or remove employees as staffing changes. Ask for a demonstration using a realistic example from your team. Find out whether the service works with your learning platform, single sign-on, calendar, or existing training records. Clarify what requires manual data entry.
Review the contract before a pilot. Check the term, renewal date, cancellation notice, seat transfers, account access after an employee leaves, and what happens to course records if you end the service. Confirm who handles support and how quickly the provider responds. Keep the pilot small. Estimate the staff time needed to assign courses, answer questions, and reconcile completion records. A tool that takes too much administration may not get used.
For PDH courses, verify approval rules for the states where your engineers are licensed. Requirements can differ by state and may change, so ask how the provider documents course approval and completion. For exam prep, ask how course content is reviewed and updated when exam specifications change. Request references from firms similar to yours in size, discipline, and state mix. Ask those firms about actual participation, support, and recordkeeping, not just course quality.
- What are the contract term, renewal, cancellation, and seat-transfer rules?
- How does the service fit a firm of our size, and what reporting can managers see?
- Which of our current tools does it connect to, and what work stays manual?
- How much staff time is needed to launch, manage, and track training?
- Can you provide references from similar firms and documentation of relevant state approvals?
