How to choose

Start with the work your firm does most often. A small practice focused on building frames may need clear load paths, dependable member checks, and useful reports. A larger firm handling bridges or unusual structures may need more ways to model, review, and share complex work. Match the software to your projects and review process, not to the longest feature list.

Check how the software fits your current tools. Ask whether it can exchange models and results with your drafting, building information modeling, and design tools, and what may need to be rebuilt by hand. Have staff try a real project file. A clean demonstration model proves little.

Plan for the time it takes to adopt the software. Ask what onboarding includes, who provides it, and whether help is available when a project is under deadline. Consider how many people will use it and how often. If only one engineer knows the workflows, that can become a bottleneck.

Read the contract before committing. Confirm how licenses are assigned, what happens when staff join or leave, how renewal and cancellation work, and whether project files remain accessible if you stop using the product. Clarify support hours, response expectations, and how updates affect existing models.

Ask for references from firms that resemble yours in size, project types, and location. Where state or local approvals apply, confirm what documentation reviewers expect and whether engineers in your jurisdiction have used the software for comparable submissions. Do not assume that an accepted calculation format guarantees approval.

Use these questions in vendor meetings:

  • Can you show the software on a project like one we completed, including review notes and final calculations?
  • Which of our current tools can exchange data with it, and what information must staff enter again?
  • What training is included, how long does it take, and what support is available during a live project?
  • How do license assignment, renewal, cancellation, file access, and support obligations work under the contract?
  • Can we speak with firms of similar size that do comparable work in our state or review jurisdiction?
