Categorical Exclusion (CE)

A category of actions that an agency has determined typically do not require a detailed environmental assessment or impact statement, subject to applicable criteria and exceptions. A project must meet the relevant agency's rules. A CE is not automatic merely because a project appears routine.

Why it matters for owners

Determining whether an action qualifies can affect review effort, documentation, and schedule assumptions.
