Owner planning tool

Succession timeline planner

Choose a target exit horizon to create a phased milestone outline. The plan uses relative periods, not calendar dates.

How to use the outline

Milestones are planning prompts. Assign owners, refine timing, and revisit the sequence as operating needs change. Internal transfers, employee ownership, and outside transactions can require different diligence and professional review.

This planner does not determine whether a transaction is feasible or recommend a path.

Example scenario

A hypothetical civil engineering firm owner sets a target horizon of 4 years and selects outside sale as the path under consideration. The planner reports 4 relative phases, with the final phase including buyer diligence materials and owner transition expectations. These inputs are hypothetical planning choices, not a forecast that a sale will happen on that schedule. The outline can help the owner decide when to start organizing records and how to pace preparation without assigning calendar dates or claiming the path is feasible. Next, the owner can review the earlier phase prompts, identify who will maintain financial and project records, and clarify what a transition could require from the owner. The owner should also compare the outline with the firm’s operating needs and personal goals, then seek qualified legal, tax, and valuation review as plans become more concrete.

Method, inputs and limits

Purpose

Create a phased milestone outline from the target exit horizon and a path under consideration.

Inputs and defaults

Target horizon: 1 to 15 whole years from now, default 5. Path: internal succession, outside sale, or undecided. No calendar dates are hardcoded.

Logic

One-year horizon produces two relative half-horizon phases. Longer horizons produce four relative quarter-horizon phases. The final phase adds path-specific prompts for internal succession, outside sale, or undecided planning. Output periods are relative labels, not calendar dates.

Outputs

Target horizon and phased milestone prompts.

Checked cases

  1. 1 year, internal: 2 phases; final phase includes successor responsibilities and financing discussion.
  2. 4 years, outside sale: 4 phases; final phase includes buyer diligence materials and owner transition expectations.
  3. 10 years, undecided: 4 phases; final phase prompts comparison of internal and outside paths.
