Key person risk

Key person risk is the exposure a business faces when important knowledge, relationships, authority, or technical capacity depends heavily on one individual. The risk may affect project delivery, client retention, licensure coverage, or business development. Documentation and cross-training can reduce dependence, though they do not eliminate it.

Why it matters for owners

Identifying critical dependencies helps guide succession and continuity planning.
