Self-Insured Retention (SIR)

An amount the insured is responsible for paying before insurance coverage responds, under the policy's terms. An SIR can differ from a deductible in how defense, payment, and insurer duties operate. The policy wording and insurer requirements determine how the retention must be satisfied.

Why it matters for owners

Firms should plan for the liquidity and claim-handling duties that accompany an SIR.
