Coordinate system

A coordinate system defines how locations are represented with coordinates, such as a local grid or a state plane system. It may use a particular projection, units, and datum. Different systems can describe the same place with different values. Surveyors and engineers document the system used and convert data carefully when combining sources.

Why it matters for owners

Consistent coordinates are essential for integrating surveys, design files, GIS, and construction layout.
