Owner Q&A · Licensing and PE

What continuing education do civil engineers need?

Continuing education rules differ among licensing boards. Required hours, accepted subjects, reporting methods, exemptions, and audit procedures may vary by state. An engineer licensed in several states may have different obligations for each credential. Check the official instructions for every board before selecting a course or submitting a renewal.

Build a record for each license that includes the renewal period, required learning categories, reporting deadline, and documentation rules. Keep completion certificates, course descriptions, provider details, dates, and any other records the board requests. If a course’s relevance or eligibility is unclear, ask the board before paying or relying on it for compliance. Do not assume that a professional society meeting, conference session, or internal training automatically qualifies.

Plan learning around both board requirements and the work the firm performs. A civil firm might identify learning needs in areas such as drainage design, geotechnical coordination, construction administration, ethics, or changes in applicable standards. The engineer and technical lead can choose suitable learning, then separately confirm whether the activity counts toward each license’s requirement. Compliance tracking and professional development support each other, but they are different checks.

Owners can make this process easier by assigning one person to maintain the firm’s license register and asking engineers to submit records soon after each course. Set internal reminders ahead of board deadlines, and review the file before renewal is due. Keep the engineer responsible for confirming their own board requirements, while giving them administrative support to gather records. If the board audits a renewal, the firm should be able to locate the supporting documentation without relying on an individual’s memory or old email.

Ask the board how it treats carryover, self-study, ethics courses, teaching, or courses completed during a prior renewal period. Rules can change, and a past acceptance does not prove that a later course will qualify.

This is general education; verify current rules with each board, and follow licensed PE judgment and local codes.
