Cost Performance Index (CPI)

An earned value measure comparing the value of completed work with the cost incurred to complete it. It is calculated using project data and a defined measurement approach. CPI is a management indicator, not a guarantee of final cost, and its usefulness depends on accurate progress and cost reporting.

Why it matters for owners

Reviewing cost trends helps identify projects that may need a recovery plan or revised forecast.
