What makes a civil engineering firm's website accessible?

An accessible website lets people with different abilities find, understand, and use its content and functions. For a civil engineering firm, that includes service descriptions, staff qualifications, project information, and ways to contact the firm. Accessibility is a practical part of making the site usable by clients, job candidates, agency staff, and members of the public.

Use semantic headings in a logical order so visitors can understand and move through a page. Make menus and controls work by keyboard, show a visible focus indicator, and use descriptive link text instead of labels such as “click here.” Provide sufficient text contrast and do not use color alone to distinguish important information. Label form fields clearly, identify errors in plain language, and make it possible to correct them without losing entered information.

Add useful alt text to meaningful images. A project image might need a short description of what it shows, while a decorative image can be omitted from the reading order. Provide captions or transcripts for video and audio. Check that pages remain usable when someone zooms in and on a small screen. Technical content should use clear language and explain specialized terms where needed.

Test common tasks with a keyboard, such as opening the navigation, reading a service page, and submitting a contact form. Where practical, include assistive technology in review. Also ask a person who uses the site to complete a task and note where they get stuck. A checklist can help find issues, but a checklist alone does not certify the site or establish that it meets legal requirements.

Ask a qualified accessibility reviewer or attorney which standards and obligations apply to the firm’s site, given the firm’s jurisdiction, contracts, and clients. Keep an accessible contact method available if a form or other feature fails. Track reported problems and assign someone to resolve them.

This is general education, not legal advice; applicable accessibility requirements, licensed PE judgment, and local codes govern.
